There was an Elephant.

One day the sun came up –

What beautiful light!

The elephant basked in the light and was happy.

But at the end of the day, the sun went down –

What terrible darkness!

And he elephant searched for light, but did not find it –

Searched in the dark, and was unhappy.

The next day, the sun came up –

What beautiful warmth!

The elephant basked in the warmth and was happy.

But at the end of the day, the sun went down –

What terrible cold!

And the elephant searched for warmth, but did not find it –

Searched in the cold, and was unhappy.

The next day, the sun came up –

What beautiful safety!

The elephant basked in the comfort and was happy.

But at the end of the day, the sun went down –

What terrible danger!

And the elephant searched for comfort, but did not find it –

Searched in the danger, and was unhappy.

One day, after the sun came up

The elephant came across a lion –

What terrible darkness, cold, and danger!

But the lion did not attack –

It is too light and warm and safe, Elephant.

It is too light to surprise you.

It is too warm to chase you.

It is too safe to catch you.

Thought the elephant –

What beautiful comfort!

And the elephant did nothing

In the light, warm, safe comfortable day.

But at the end of the day, the sun went down

And the lion ate the elephant.

And there was a monkey

Watching the lion eat in the night –

You are much smaller than that elephant.

Said the lion –

And yet it is in my belly.

Said the monkey –

How was this done?

And the lion –

In the night.

Asked the monkey –

What of light, warmth, and safety?

But the lion said no more –

He but ate and swallowed the elephant.
